DescriptionDhoti is a traditional garment consisting of a piece of material tied around the waist and extending to cover most of the legs. Dhoti is also known as panche, vesti, dhuti, mardani, chaadra, dhotar, dhotiyue, suriya dhuti, panchagacham, veshti, lungi, vaetti, mundu or panche. Fabric may be cotton, pure silk, tussar silk, art silk, polyester, linen or khadi. They come in different sizes, such as, 1.8 meters, 2 mtrs., 2.25mts., 3.8 mts. 4 meters, 4.5 mtrs. Dhoti sets, Iyer veshti, iyengar pancha, dhoti with towel commonly known as angavastram comes as 8x4, 9x5, 10x6. Fancy borders include peacock, swan, lotus, annapakshi, mayil, thamarai, kumbam, kalasam designs. Bleached and unbleached are the two broad categories. They are worn for celebrations, occassions like wedding, muhurtham, party or daily regular washable use. Modern geneartion readymade dhotis with pocket, adjustable waist sizes 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 with velcro are common. Kids dhotis with fancy colored shirts are prefferred by many. Festive moods include Kerala Ayyappan black navy blue, Om Shakthi red, Kandha Shashti Murugan Tamil Nadu Palani green dhotis. Border style range from mayil kann, gundanchu, bavanchu,pure silk zari, cotton zari, silver zari border to double side, double color borders. Border sizes vary from half inch to 10 inches. Mayilkan borders range from 5 kan, 7kan, 9kan to 21kan. Dhotis come in plain or solid colours. Common colors are white, half white, cream, yellow, orange, kavi, brown, maroon, red, black, green, yellow, kavi, royal blue.
